[Reebok Shoes] Commercial
August 21st, 2010 Saturday
Call time @ 8:30pm
Location: Langley
Set: Snowy White Christmas (outdoor with man-made snow)
I was very excited to get booked for this one, because it's a COMMERCIAL. I've never done commercial before and I've heard from other backgrounds that commercial pay is usually good. Regardless, I wanted to be on commercial anyhow. So there I was, for the Reebok shoes.
When I arrived, I was instantly amazed by the set that I saw -- very beautiful wooden house covered in both fake and real snow! The house was lit by orange light, its roof was covered by white blanket so from far, it looked like it was covered by snow. The crew was working hard making real snow. And I was working hard standing there and watching them :P
It was a long night of waiting, the backgrounds pretty much just waited for 7 hours and didn't get to go on set at all! Even though you could say it's great that you get paid without having to work, but it would be so cool to be on the snow set and be seen in the commercial if we were lucky. Anyhow, no complaints, the meal was great, the catering had the most wonderful, delicious dessert, and awesome people on set. I've taken many photos of the meal, extras holding tent and the set from far (as many passerby and crew people took photos so I thought I would too, though I shouldn't really have... I hope I don't fired by showing photos here...fingers crossed!) and a bunny!! I've got a little "Bunny Rescue" story to share with you all.
So as usually, we were waiting at our holding (see picture on the right) and I was just standing by the holding and watching the snow machine making real snow. There are about 2 cats from the neighbourhood that joined us for the night, they were friendly cats and would let us pet them. It was all peaceful for the first several hours. Suddenly, some human yelling broke the silence and some other weird animal sound, sounded like a guinea pig! It was a high pitch but uneasy sound. It got my attention right away because I realized right away that there was a little bunny was yelling for help. I saw a crew member was running after one of the neighbour cats! I started running after him though I wasn't sure if I should do this, I acted without thinking much. Anyway, what I saw was a cat chasing after a little bunny (seriously, it looked like a mouse!!) and there were 2 crew guys chasing after this cat, trying to stop the cat from eating the poor bunny. I caught up and asked what happened. They told me that it's a little bunny, must be a wild one and the cats were about to eat it. One of the cats had it in its mouth!
Omg! That is so scary. I saw the bunny in the cat's mouth. One of the crew guys hit the cat with a plastic box, tried to scare the cat so it would free that little poor thing. The cat freed the bunny and the bunny quickly went into the bushes. Before it ran into the bushes, I saw blood and wound on its back. Those friendly crew guys had to go back to work so they left. The cats wouldn't give up, they were still hunting around the bushes trying to find the bunny. I didn't know what to do to help so I just stood around the bushes and scared the cats away. Cats, or I should say animals, are smart. They knew that I was there to stop them so they just hid under a truck near the bushes and waited for me to leave. After awhile I thought the cats would give up and I didn't see or hear the bunny nearby, thought it must've gotten away without me noticing. So I walked back to my holding tent. Just not long after I left, the cats GOT the bunny, had it in the mouth. I saw and said "SHIT!" and started running after the cats. Cats saw me running toward them so they ran into someone's garden. I chased and decided to "break in" the garden and threw little rocks at the cats and finally the cat let go of the bunny. The bunny was so tiny! One of the backgrounds at the holding heard me saying "SHIT!" and followed me behind, she was brave and nice enough to grab the injured bunny for me. I didn't know if I should touch the bunny because it might have disease or what not. That poor bunny was hurt, blood on its back, part of the back had no fur, you could see bare skin. That little was terrified and shaking like crazy as it was in her hands.
YEAY! We did rescued the bunny. I was so happy.
The other backgrounds at the holding saw us coming back with a little creature in her hands and came up and asked what happened. I told them the story in short, said the bunny is now safe in her hands. They saw the bunny and went "awwwwww! look at this poor thing". We looked for a box to put the bunny in. We "stole" a cardboard box from the catering truck (because she wasn't around =P but we asked her when she showed up). The catering lady was so generous, she gave the bunny lettuce and a big carrot. But it was terrified, wouldn't move, wouldn't eat a thing.
I was thinking, so what's next? What should we do with the bunny? Should I take it home? Bring it to the vet?
Luckily, there was a nice lady from the traffic control team saw us with the bunny and heard about the story. She told us that she has a farm and has a lot of rescued animals. So we all thought it was the best idea for her to bring it home. What a relief! At least we know that the bunny could be in good hands, safe and sound. Everyone was happy :)
By the way, did I say that the meal was great and the dessert was SO GOOD. Too bad I don't have a photo of the dessert, but oh my, YUMMY!
What a night on set. The lady who rescued the bunny with me said we were meant to be there that night, even though we didn't get to go on set. Haha I agreed. We were both proud and glad we did something good for the day. So we got wrapped not long after this little animal rescue, I went home satisfied.

[Fringe] TV - Season 3 Episode 3
August 11th, 2010 Wednesday
Call time @ 7am
It was my first time going on a quite well-known TV show. I got a call from my agent asking if I could go for a 7am call time the next morning on such a short notice (replacement of another background). Of course I said yes since I had no plans for the next day.
I got an email with the details but I realized there's NO information on wardrobe!! I started to panic because it was very late to call my agent to ask. I did not know what to bring so I pretty much just packed all kinds of clothes I could possibly imagine to wear for "Fringe". Since I have never seen the show and had no idea what Fringe was about, I had to google the characters' clothes style. I packed business clothes, casual, dresses, and a few winter clothes as well. I had the biggest luggage of wardrobe for the first time.
The next morning, I got up and went to set in Burnaby near Vancouver. It was a VERY cool set! It was built for Watchmen. A New York street style of set. It's got stores, streets lights, traffic lights, buildings, and fake subway stairs. I was excited to be on set.
Then I got to the wrangler and found out that the person I was supposed to replace was there!! O.M.G I was like... SO does that mean I woke up so early and panicked all night for nothing? Of course, I explained why I was there because my agent called and said I was there to replace this girl. Apparently there was a miscommunication between the agency and that girl. Luckily the AD said I could stay! Thank god :D

So the WATCHMEN set was really cool. All the fake streets, traffic lights, bakery, newspaper stand, shops and even underground subway (well, only the stairs and signs, no actual underground space). I was one of the many passerby, the scene was a car accident scene. We just had to stand on the streets and looked confused and wondered about the accident. There was an actress lying on the ground as she was hit by the bus. She's got fake blood on her, looked so real as she really got hit by the bus. Too bad I can't take photos of a set like this. It would be cool if I could show how real that set was. There were policemen walking around, cyclist, newspaper stand owner and the CAST. I saw Olivia Dunham who played Anna Torv! She is pretty in person and looked pretty young too.

[Taken From Me] Tiffany Rubin's Movie

We were filming around Surrey Central area, which was really cool because I spent my 4 years at SFU Surrey there. I didn't know much about the film and the storyline (as usual), I was basically just a passerby on streets outside "FBI building" and a passenger at "airport". Director was Gary Harvey.
The basic story is like this:
"Based on the true story of Tiffany Rubin (Henson) and the daring rescue of her six-year-old son, Kobe, after he was abducted by his biological father and taken from his home in Queens, New York
, all the way to Seoul, South Korea. With the help of Mark Miller (O'Quinn) and his charitable organization The American Association for Lost Children, Tiffany was able to travel to Korea to execute a high-stakes plan to bring her son home."
As the we were waiting for the set to be ready, I saw this guy sitting on this "airport waiting area chair" who looked SOOO familiar. O.M.G! It was LOCK from LOST!!! I can't say that he was my favourite character in LOST but OMG it's my favourite show and I was lucky to see one of the main characters in real life!! I was so excited like I was never before!! I usually don't recognize any characters. But this time I recognized this guy that is from my favourite TV show. I was SO happy! I could only stare at him since i was working as a background, so I couldn't ask to take photos and ask for autograph like other people did!! I was damn jealous!!! ARG!!
Anyway :( back to work.
It was great to go back to my lovely surrey campus!
It was funny how the SFU mezzanine became the "airport", where the "son" with his "mom" meet their "granny". They had this shot outside the open lab, beside Blenz coffee, in front of the escalator. I was standing just in front of it beside a couple "airport security guards" pretending I was waiting for someone to come out from the terminal. Pretty cool to actually see the scene right in front of me. I usually don't get to see much since I often get placed far away from the camera. I don't really mind because it's less stressful :P
"CUT!" called from the director, Lock was in front of me and a couple of security guards and said "well, looks like the people you're waiting to come aint coming at all" in Lock's tone and voice!! To me, he was just like Lock and sounded like Lock and reminds me the good times of LOST. Aww I miss LOST so much...
There was this female actress that's from another movie called "Benjamin Button". I didn't recognize her until someone pointed it out to me. She played Benjamin's mom in that movie. She looked pretty, friendly and quite fit, to.
It was a 6.5 hour day. Not too bad, I like to keep it short though some people like 12~16 hours days for the overtime/double time pay. But I think it's way too long. Anyway, another great film shoot experience this year. I have a night shoot tomorrow in Langley. Hopefully it will be a good one too!

[The Troop] TV Series Season 2

I'm back on set again after 5 months since last one "True Blue" in March. I sure was excited to go back to studio again. It's my first time going back to the same film and same set location. It was the studio in Maple Ridge where I was there for "The Troop" season 1. It feels quite different when you've been to the place before, feels more friendly in a way :P
So it was a long day, 10.75 hours since 9:30am. Fun part was that, I got to see some actions -- stunt!!! So the scene was like this, at a high school Valentine's dance, a monster shows up, attacks the students and throws them around at the dance. The students panic and run around. There were 4 stunt actors/actresses jumping and falling on floor and table. There was this "one shot and only" scene where a table full of desserts like cupcakes, donuts and cookies plus a huge bowl of punch, an actress falls on to the table with bunch of backgrounds running and panicking in the back. I was excited to see the falling action but then i was too focused on my "panicking" so I didn't get to see it. Oh and there was juice punch all over the floor afterwards, a guy slipped during the shot and some people were laughing because of it. Hopefully the camera didn't catch any "laughing" or "smiling faces, or else the shot would totally be ruined.
I met a cute high school girl on set. She's tall, pretty and friendly. I really wanted to ask her to be my photoshoot model but I was afraid that she might think I'm weird so I didn't. Good thing she added me on facebook, I shall find a chance to ask ;)
Anyway, feel great to be back on set. I wonder when will my next one be, I don't have much time left for it before I start full time work.

[True Blue] TV Show Pilot
March 20th, 2010 Saturday
Call time @ 6:15am
We were told to report to circus located at Andy Livingston Park at Keefer and Quebec. SO I had to drive due to early call time and no transportation at my departure time. I circled around the park and saw absolutely no crew, traliers, set etc. I thought I messed up the dates but no it was right. After 20 minutes, I saw 3 people standing at a corner by the park with their wardrobe (you know who are the background performers when you are one! yay! ) so I parked my car and went up to them. After a couple of questions and finding out that we're all from the same agency, we knew that the info we were give was incorrect. *phone rings* Great! Our agent found out the correct location was just 4 blocks away. I gave them a ride, no big deal. What a morning to start off a shoot. No good!
The set was at Victory Square on Hastings, right in front of VCC, where I come every morning! HA! So there was no breakfast provided as they've informed us already. We were on set from 7am'ish till 1pm! It was COLD out there. My toes were SO numb and my hands were freezing. It wasn't fun outside.
{Highlight of the day}
A guy started yelling right before we can "action", I thought it was the director who was yelling. But nope, it was a random guy on the street yelling at US, the whole crew! It was hilarious because that guy who I would think is perfectly normal, that in fact, was screaming and yelling "YOU GUYS ALWAYS MAKE MONEY! I DON'T MAKE MONEY, WHAT ABOUT ME? WHAT ABOUT ME? HUH? YOU GUYS JUST MAKE MONEY AND I DON'T, WHAT ABOUT ME!??!?!!" He kept going on and on to the point we were just like "... ok sir, are you done? you're pretty hilarious!" Then finally he started walking away, one of our police officers just went after himi on the cool police motocycle. Great! Someone was in trouble :P
Anyway, the 6:15am people were wrapper RIGHT BEFORE lunch. I think this production has a real tight budget. This is so far the ONLY shoot I've done that I didn't get to have any meals! How lovely, isn't "meals" just one of the best part for backgrounds to have on set? C'mon TRUE BLUE! I got sick right after I got home. Thanks!

It was a different experience, indoor studio with stage set up! It was rainy and cold, extra holding was outdoor.

Looks like I never got back to finish writing about this post. It's been more than a year since I was on this Best Player movie. It's time for me to finish something that I started!
I can't quite remember the exact details of what happened and what we did that day. Pretty much all I remember is, it was a cold rainy day at the PNE. Our extra holding tent was outside, some heaters but it was very wet. The rain was pouring and my shoes were all wet. Definitely wasn't the right day to be on set.
Anyhow, the indoor set was cool. They had this stage made up, supposedly to be a "video game contest" set. It had quite a futuristic style. The characters were good at their acting, It was one of the set experiences that I got to see the characters very closely. I was right behind Jenette McCurdy.
Before I go on with what I saw, I'll explain what the extras were doing for that scene. Basically, we were bunch of FANS of different contestants. We had to cheer ALL NIGHT with our hands in the air, jumping up and down, and doing the silent cheering!
Honestly, it was very tiring to do the fake cheering + jumping up and down all night long. Oh man... my arms got so sore after I got home...
Anyways, so back to Jenette McCurdy, she's such a sweetie. She seemed pretty talkative to me and she was very nice to the extras. One of the extras saw her heels were about to break (she could've had hurt herself pretty bad) and told her about it. She was very thankful and started chatting with us. Didn't have attitude as you'd normally expect from the cast...
So I don't remember much about this one. I don't have any photos to share with you so I'll just leave it as is.

Looks like I never got back to finish writing about this post. It's been more than a year since I was on this Best Player movie. It's time for me to finish something that I started!
I can't quite remember the exact details of what happened and what we did that day. Pretty much all I remember is, it was a cold rainy day at the PNE. Our extra holding tent was outside, some heaters but it was very wet. The rain was pouring and my shoes were all wet. Definitely wasn't the right day to be on set.
Anyhow, the indoor set was cool. They had this stage made up, supposedly to be a "video game contest" set. It had quite a futuristic style. The characters were good at their acting, It was one of the set experiences that I got to see the characters very closely. I was right behind Jenette McCurdy.
Before I go on with what I saw, I'll explain what the extras were doing for that scene. Basically, we were bunch of FANS of different contestants. We had to cheer ALL NIGHT with our hands in the air, jumping up and down, and doing the silent cheering!
Honestly, it was very tiring to do the fake cheering + jumping up and down all night long. Oh man... my arms got so sore after I got home...
Anyways, so back to Jenette McCurdy, she's such a sweetie. She seemed pretty talkative to me and she was very nice to the extras. One of the extras saw her heels were about to break (she could've had hurt herself pretty bad) and told her about it. She was very thankful and started chatting with us. Didn't have attitude as you'd normally expect from the cast...
So I don't remember much about this one. I don't have any photos to share with you so I'll just leave it as is.

[work] The Troop
Another Nickelodeon movie that I've done. This time was in Maple Ridge, more in between Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge. It was a new experience for me because it was in a studio. I've visited several studios but never actually did extras/film in them. It was cool and indoor :) I got up early for my 7:00am call time. Parked near the crew park and walked to the holding area. When I got to the holding, there was NO ONE and I thought where's everybody. Gladly people started coming later and there was only 8 of us: 4 gals and 4 dudes. I guess it was because we were doing a high school dance so they wanted 4 couples.
We waited for hours outside the studio, I sat under the sun outside the holding and enjoyed myself sitting there. There were 2 guys talking about this guy they know from the sets, non stop talking. Ha ha it was not bothering me tho, good to hear funny stories.
Anyhow, so the work we did was to stand around at the dance floor and this "worm" thing appears and everybody just RUN and SCARED. It was short filming, lunch was great and crew was friendly. I got to go home around 2:30pm which was perfect because I got union pay (min 8 hour pay)! And I got to hear stories from the people who were in Twilight and also doing Percy Jackson too.

[work] The Boy Who Cried Werewolf

So I was on set last night for this shoot of The Boy Who Cried Werewolf, a Nickelodeon movie. I was told that I might have to wear a rubber mask, stuff like Halloween costume. But I didn't get to wear one eventually. When I arrived the set in Richmond, the place called Fantasy Garden looked so... fantasy! It's an old town looking village. And I guess the reason why they chose this place to shoot is because it looks sort of "Romania"ish. Pretty cool place! So my call time was 6pm and bunch of us extras waited in holding as usual. Then finally we got to go on set for shoot. Bunch of us in village looking people, and others were in monster costumes (like werewolf, vampires, witches, stuff like that) just form a group of people attending a festival in the village. The main character, a young boy named Chase Ellison from San Diego, just needed to run away from a guy who was chasing. I wasn't too sure what the scene was about other than I was just a "villagers attending festival." Now I'm off to bed, 7am call time tomorrow for The Troop.

[Vampire Diaries] WOW I didn't know...
I just found something I personally feel amazing about tonight. I was just reading articles, tweets, and searches on the Vampire Diaries. Then I found an article with the title of Vampire Diaries Extra Blogs About Her Experience. When I saw this title I had a feeling that it might be me! And CLICK! Yes! It's MY blog! I was surprised, VERY surprised indeed. First, I didn't know that other than my bf and a good friend who read my blog, there are actually people on internet that found my blog and post it up on the fan site. Even it's not really a big thing that I should be proud of or something but I just find it amazing. And sure that I feel happy about it. :D It just made my day!
Now I can't wait to have more bookings and see more productions and blog about them! :)

[work] Vampire Diaries - Pilot Shoot
So I came back from the shoot of Vampire Diaries (here's link to its official site and link to IMDB) yesterday and was very tired. However, it was a much better experience so far I'd say. First of all, We (the extras) didn't really have to wait for our scenes, we pretty much just kept on filming the whole time. The call times were 2pm, 2:18pm, 2:30pm. The the people with 2:30pm call time were unfortunately wrapped up after a scene of out side the school. I was glad to stay or else it'd be a waste of gas money to get there for 4 hours of pay.
So guess how long the overall shoot for the day? Well, most of us were there from 2:18pm to 2:24am! We had an hour for lunch. The rest, we just ... filmed! Glad that I brought cards because I had fun playing cards with the people I met on set: Ayisha, Olga, Nicole, some many other I don't remember names of. The snacks were alright, aint the best but what else can we expect? Good enough for me :) The lunch was not bad, I had my turkey, caesar salad, and bunch of other yummy food that I don't know how I should call them.
Anyway, so there was this scene that I was very close to the actresses and actors. I didn't know who they were other than "oh they're the main people!" One of the actresses I thought was pretty! I later found out her name is Nina Dobrev (playing Elena, the main character). The other cast were Paul Wesley (playing Stefan), Katerina Graham (playing Bonnie) Candice Accola, (playing Caroline), Steven R. McQueen (playing Jermey, Elena's brother) and I didn't get to see Ian Somerhalder (should be playing Damon and the reason why I wanna see him because he was in LOST) though. It was cool to know that I was standing right next to them, well I didn't really know until I got home and did my researches online :P haha! Oh and I found Katerina on Twitter too!
I can't wait to have more shoots! It's fun and I don't really care about the pay at all. It's a different world to see :) Oh and I saw the director after I've found him on Twitter! COOL!

[work] Pulling - Pilot Shoot
Quick enough after I had my first official background work last Thursday in Squamish, I was booked and called in for Pulling (pilot) today in Aldergrove. Good thing to start off was that my call time was at 11:30am which I thought was great if to compare with the night shoot that I had. One downside is that today was such a nice sunny day! I was stuck in this building for hours! We had lunch at 3'o clock. The lunch was great, we had ham/turkey, tofu curry, lots of salads including greek salads, ice cream, juice, and lots of other stuff. It was so much better than the one on Thursday really. After having a nice lunch, we finally got our scene around 6-7pm. My first shot was to walk across the stage (I was a patron at a cowboy bar and grill!) Then got sent back with a few others after our first walk of the day. Then waited again in the holding and saw new snacks came up! I had this mini bagel with cream cheese and some kind of honey jelly thing, oh my, it was delicious! I liked it so much so I had a few more! :) The crafty was better that last time too!
Anyhow, so after I-don't-know-how-long hours, we did our second shoot which I had to carry a cute cowboy boot looking glass filled with beer (non-alcohol) walking out from the ladies room with another lady. We walked toward 2 guys who sat at the bar, one white one black, oh the lady I was with is white too and I'm yellow, what a great combination! Ha ha! Anyway, it was fun to act without saying anything. The black guy was great! He acted like he was real talking to us about his stories and all that. I had to walk quite a few times then got sent back to holding again.
Later we were going back and forth for a couple times until we had our last scene where I just walk across the stage again and another was just to stand around the bar to make it look busy. And there DONE! Though I didn't do much at this shoot but I sure enjoyed warm indoor condition this time!
One funny note is that 2 people asked me the same question: "How old are you, Ruby?" And my response was that: "Yeah I knew it, I know I look young since most of the asians look younger than their age!" I knew it, people thought I was under 20s or probably thought I was still in high school. Ha ha! It made my day :D
I met 3 people this time, one guy has the same birthday as me! What a coincidence! Another guy I thoguht was cool because he did what I really wanted to do - driving across Canada from west coast to Toronto! He came from Toronto by car! WOW! And the lady which I find smart and friendly is engaged! Wow! What was even more surprising is that, she's 2 years younger than me! I can't imagine myself being engaged when I was 20. Must be scary for me. Anyway, that's it for my day today! I'll update my shoot that's coming up this Thursday soon!

[work] On The Run - Steven Seagal
So I came back from my first background work last Thursday late night, or I should say Friday morning. I was extremely cold and tired due to the fact that it was very cold in Squamish and waited for hours. I enjoyed it however. It was just that I lose my heat very easily for those who know me well enough, I just can't tolerate cold!
So the set was at Porteau Provincial Park in Squamish. I picked up another extra from Burnaby and drove all the way to Squamish. It was dark and quite a lot of people/crew/trailer trucks. I was excited but not as excited as I thought I would be. I signed in, checked with wardrobe lady and went to the holding for extras. We were there from 11:15pm till around 6am'ish. The sky was about to bright up. They finally called us in and the first shot was on the beach. The scene was like this: we, as the "illegal immigrants", just got off the boat and arrived this free land. There were 4 smugglers to pick us up. We had to pretend that "just got off the boat and walking from beach to land." It was so cold! We had to walk on the rocky beach which was extremely wet. Then we took our custome photos after about 4 shots of this scenes. Then we had another shot of reserve work at a different location on the same beach. Then we were back to holding to wait for our second scene.
The second scene was better because it was "indoor", we were in this big metal container that was supposed to be "the shipping container on the ocean." I just happened to sit beside one of the main characters in this container and acted like we were in it for weeks and waiting to arrive the free land. I just showed my real emotions there "waited for long, tired, cold, axiety" as it was just like what we were supposed to be in the scene. Ha ha! As for the the rest of this scene, I just can't really remember what it was like because I was about to pass out.
So that was it! 7 hours of my first official background work. 5.5 hours of waiting. 1.5 hours of acting. I took some pictures but most of them are dark. I might post them up after some adjustments.
OH! And NO, I did not get to see Steven Seagal. It's sad because the day of my shoot was the last day of the whole shoot! Too bad! Well I don't really know about this guy either. :P

[work] I'm BOOKED! for The Vampire Diaries
Got a text message from Bruce, YES I'm booked for The Vampire Diaries! Coming up April 2/9th. I'm quite exciting though my schedule is getting busier and busier in April. I won't even have time for any of the freelance work. Well I'm not really started on freelance but I guess that's a No-time-to-prepare kind of excuse in April. So I will probably be booked on 31st as well but that's just a unconfirmed :( All I know is it's for Steven Segueal in Squamish. Anyhow, hopefully more updates to come! So far, I only have 7 days of April free! 7 ONLY! I'm excited and scared both way! HA!

Now I'm booked for sure on both April 2nd and 9th. But no more details on where/what/when from Bruce until the day before that he'd call. Excited!
